Want to learn how strength-based strategies can support your parenting journey?
We are inviting rural parents of elementary school-aged children in School District 57 (ages 5-12) who have a primary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder to join our parent learning group!
We are looking for volunteers to participate in six (90-minute) learning sessions exploring how strength-based parenting approaches can positively impact the experiences and perspectives of parents with children with autism. There will also be five 20-minute practice exercises between sessions. The study includes three (20-35 minute) surveys: one before, after, and in August. Some time will be required to review the information and consent letter, complete a registration questionnaire, and sign into the Zoom meetings each week.
Rural families experience unique challenges when it comes to parenting a child on the autism spectrum. By participating in this study, you can develop a strengths-based approach by identifying and amplifying your child's character strengths. You also may develop the competency to guide your child in taking action to use and develop their strengths. The study provides an opportunity to build connections with other families. Also, you will help us understand how strength-based parenting approaches can help shape positive parenting experiences. Additionally, you will help us explore the effects of strength-based approaches on parent confidence, and family relationships.

Participants will have children in the following schools within School District 57:

Beaverly Elementary, Buckhorn Elementary, Blackburn Elementary, Giscome Elementary, Pineview Elementary, Morfee Elementary, McBride Centennial Elementary, Hixon Elementary, and Valemont Elementary are included. Nukko Lake Elementary is not included.
What to Expect Before Starting
How This Study Will Benefit You
As a participant in this study, an informed consent letter will be shared and reviewed with you. You will be asked to complete a brief confidential baseline survey about your current experiences as a rural parent of a child with autism. You will be invited to participate in a weekly online group session with other parents to learn about strength-based parenting strategies. When the online sessions are complete, you will complete a post-session and retention survey about your experiences. Your participation is entirely voluntary.
Your participation in this study will assist us in discovering how rural families with neurodivergent children might be better served and supported. Additionally, you will have opportunities to connect with other rural parents, share experiences, and learn strength-based strategies to add to your parenting toolkit. In appreciation of your time, participants who complete the first survey and attend the first learning session will receive a $25 Tim Horton’s gift card and a copy of O’Neill’s The strengths-based guide to supporting autistic children: A Positive Psychology Approach to Parenting ($35).
